Nobody probably expected the winner of the second CDL Major in Minnesota last Sunday.

The Los Angeles Guerillas’ comeback in the second CDL major in Minnesota is one for the history books. We’ll tell you what you missed.

From zero to hero

In fact, the tournament didn’t start out well for the LA Guerrilla boys on the first Thursday. In their first game against Boston Breach they lost with a clear 0:3 and had to be relegated to the lower bracket of the tournament. While most eyes were on Atlanza FaZe, OpTic Texas and hosts Minnesota RØKKR, many were late to notice the comeback LA Guerillas made in the Losers Round.

After the botched start, they then seemed to have found their form in their second and third matches on Friday against Toronto Ultra (3-1) and London Royal Ravens (3-0). The Guerillas also continued their run in the third round of the Losers Round with a 3-2 win over Seattle Surge. History was then to be made on the final day of the tournament.

While Atlanta FaZe lived up to their reputation as one of the best CDL teams and had already entered the final with their win over Boston Breach, their opponent was yet to be determined. After the LA Guerillas celebrated their fourth win in the lower bracket of the tournament against the Floria Mutineers (3:2), people slowly started to realise what sensation could be in the offing. Boston Breach also failed to convert their second chance to reach the final and were beaten 3-2 by the unstoppable comeback of the LA Guerillas.

It was bound to happen

Only once more did the underdogs need to win to make the dream of victory and their entry in the history books perfect. However, none other than the current best team still had something to say about it. The final between Atlanza FaZe and the LA Guerillas was probably not on anyone’s radar. In the best of 9 format, the boys from Atlanta FaZe won the first match (Hardpoint) with a difference of over 100 points. After that, however, it was over for the time being and the Guerillas took the reins.

The LA Guerillas won the next four maps and put their opponents under enormous pressure. FaZe won the sixth map again, but the joy over the victory on Tuscan in control play mode was short-lived. It was now 4:2 for the Guerillas and the next game was a match point for the underdogs from Los Angeles.

What had to happen happened, on the Berlin map in Search and Destroy mode, the LA Guerillas were able to fulfil their dream of the championship and won against Atlanta FaZe with 6:4. The final score of the match was thus 5:2 and visibly enthusiastic fans cheered the winners with chants. The LA Guerrillas won an incredible six in a row to complete one of the greatest comebacks in CDL history.
