If you can’t hit anything in BF 2042, it’s not always your fault, it’s the Bloom. We explain what that is and what you can do about it.
Battlefield 2042 is finally here – at least for subscribers of EA Play and all pre-orderers of the Gold and Premium Editions. But right at the release, the game struggles with massive technical problems, which we explain to you here.
Another big criticism from many players is that their shots don’t really feel like they’re getting where they’re aiming. But that’s the way the developers want it.
Bloom prevents precise shots
This is the problem: In Battlefield 2042 there is a mechanic called Bloom, also called Weapon Bloom. Normally, one would assume that aimed shots would arrive exactly where you aim with your crosshairs.
But Bloom prevents this: The feature adds a random element to every shot you fire. So your shots don’t always hit exactly where you aim, but somewhere in a small zone around the crosshair. Here is an example of what this looks like in action:

Bloom is different from controllable recoil in that it primarily causes the position of your crosshairs to warp as you shoot.
What the shooter expert says about Bloom
The Twitch streamer Shroud, former Counter-Strike pro and probably the best shooter player on the streaming platform, has now also spoken out about the Bloom.
For him, the Bloom is a feature that was only included to give bad players better chances. After a fan wrote in his Twitch chat that he’d rather have Bloom in the game than be lasered across half the map by a nerd, Shroud said:
See, that’s exactly why they did it. To give people like you a fair chance. I get it. It makes sense. It just doesn’t feel very good. It rewards worse players, which is kind of weird. I just don’t agree with it.
Shorud is nevertheless capable of single-handedly deciding entire games, as he shows in the following clip, for example.
What you can do against Bloom
Bloom and the unreliable aiming are things that Battlefield players will now have to get used to. Of course, we want to give you a few tips on how to do that.
Choose the right weapon: Did you pay attention in the video above? Then you will certainly have seen that shooter expert Shroud does not use an assault rifle – because this type of weapon is currently particularly badly affected by the Bloom. So at short range you should rather use a submachine gun and at medium range a semi-automatic DMR.
Note the distance: Due to the Bloom, your bullets do not leave your barrel in a straight line in the direction of the crosshairs, but are slightly fanned out. So the further away you are from your target, the more noticeable the effect. It is not always so easy to do, but if you can, you should keep the distance to your opponent as small as possible.
Don’t move: Well-known shooter rules also apply in Battlefield 2042. If you want to hit as accurately as possible, you should stand still instead of punishing wildly. Ideally, you should also crouch or lie down, as this reduces the Bloom effect even further.
