Dying forces players to restart or switch servers, resulting in the loss of equipment. Developer Jagex is tying the launch to a raffle featuring real-world fan merchandise.

Today, Jagex is introducing a brand-new, permanent game mode in Old School RuneScape aimed at the “bravest adventurers”: Hardcore Worlds.

This mode runs completely separately from the main game but offers all the usual features—with one crucial exception: Your characters have only one life. No respawns. No second chances. Here, death means the end—no coming back.

Self-Sustaining Economy and Permadeath: A Fresh Start or Transfer After a Screen Death

Since the Hardcore Worlds run in parallel, they also feature their own independent economy. You can trade with other players, have full access to the Grand Exchange, and level up with the same XP and drop rates. In addition, all upcoming OSRS content is included—but this time, death is breathing down your neck at every turn.

If a character meets their end, Death himself presents you with a choice: Either reset your progress completely and start over, or get banished from the Hardcore Worlds and switch to the main game’s regular servers. There, you can keep your character’s progress and equipment, but you’ll lose any item that doesn’t fall under the “Items kept on Death” category.

Reaper’s Raffle and World Firsts: Real Fan Merchandise Prizes from NPC Death

“The Reaper has been waiting a long time for this moment,” emphasizes Creative Director Kieren Charles. “In a game mode where death is permanent, every single decision counts! Hardcore Worlds offer our most fearless players the chance to experience the entire game with maximum stakes. Whether you’re a veteran looking for a fresh challenge or just love taking risks: We’ll see you out there. And try to stay alive!”

In addition, the “Reaper’s Raffle” and special “World First” rewards launch today. Players who complete tasks assigned by the NPC Death can win tangible real-world prizes. Each successful completion earns you a ticket for the raffle.
