The 1.27 GB patch is intended to prevent modifications so that the open-world hit doesn’t end up as an illegal copy on hacked consoles or on the PC.

Sony has released another firmware update for the PlayStation 5. Ahead of the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, the company is working to combat the ongoing jailbreak efforts by the homebrew community.

Update 26.07-14.22.00 is available for download as of today; it is approximately 1.27 GB in size and focuses on one key aspect: “We’ve made some security improvements to the system software,” the company states.

The company last released an update on October 21. At that time, there was no mention of security updates, though insiders assumed it was a response to recent developments.

Jailbreaks and Pirated Copies: How Sony Is Fighting Back with Mandatory Firmware Updates

Last month, jailbreaks for older system versions were posted online. This allows for far-reaching modifications to the console, which could also open the door to software piracy.

Sony’s response was to require that some newer PS5 titles have firmware version 14.00 installed in order to download updates—an incentive for the modding community to redouble its efforts.

A Shield for GTA 6: The Cat-and-Mouse Game Ahead of the Mega Release

The cat-and-mouse game thus enters the next round: Modders strive to crack the latest version, whereupon Sony immediately counters with the next system update. Especially with the upcoming release of GTA 6, the company likely has a vested interest in ensuring that the open-world title doesn’t end up as an illegal copy on hacked consoles or even make its way to the PC.

It is believed that GTA 6 requires at least firmware version 14.20—though following the latest PS5 patch, this could also be the current version. Furthermore, it cannot be ruled out that Sony will release another patch before the game’s launch.
