Nightdive’s remaster of the stealth classic includes modern quality-of-life features and gamepad support, as well as an all-new story expansion.

After the remaster, Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, was leaked ahead of time, Nightdive had already released a trailer in which the protagonist, Garrett himself, noted that the project wasn’t quite so secret anymore. And now the studio, together with Eidos Montreal and Atari, has finally made the official announcement: The remaster will be released on December 3 on PC (via Steam, GOG, and Epic), PlayStation 5 and PS4, Switch and Switch 2, and Xbox Series S/X.

For just under 30 euros, not only will the standard version be available, but also a Deluxe Digital Edition for just under 35 euros, which additionally includes the soundtrack, an art book, and an excerpt from an upcoming novel that retells the story of Thief: The Dark Project.

The real highlight, however, is the Deluxe Trapezoid Edition: a physical edition whose shape mimics the legendary trapezoidal form of the PC game released in 1998. Not only does it look great, but in addition to the game, it also includes a printed manual, a Steelbook case, and a Remaster Diary—essentially a developer’s diary for the re-release.

Well, that original box is one of the few I’ve kept over the years. (The rest ended up in the trash at some point, since I don’t collect things on principle.) Still, I’m thinking about supporting this cool idea and shelling out just under 70 euros for it. Or should I put that money toward a PS5 version of Star Wars: Galactic Racer instead, since almost all my friends are playing multiplayer on consoles? Well, we’ll see.

Mirror, mirror…

In any case, the box isn’t the only special feature. In fact, every version of the game includes a brand-new campaign, *The Tarnished Mirror*, which—in my opinion—fits perfectly into the universe of master thief Garrett, starting with the name alone.

It also fits perfectly into the remaster because it was developed by none other than the team responsible for the excellent mod *The Black Parade*, released three years ago. “The Tarnished Mirror” serves as a bridge between *Thief* and *Thief 2*, and the developers have taken full advantage of the remastering technology offered by Nightdive’s KEX engine.
