Shigeru Miyamoto is currently focusing on movies and aims to make Nintendo’s brands successful beyond the gaming world. However, he does not rule out a return to game development. He is considering a project that might even surprise Nintendo employees.

Throughout his long career, Shigeru Miyamoto has left a lasting mark on the video game world with characters such as Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Fox McCloud. Lately, however, the Nintendo veteran has been increasingly focusing on film projects and the further development of well-known brands outside the gaming industry. Nevertheless, a complete departure from game development does not seem to be on the horizon for the 73-year-old. In a recent interview, Miyamoto hinted that he could certainly imagine returning to game development.

The occasion for the interview with the Japanese magazine Denfaminicogamer was the awarding of the Japanese Order of Culture to the longtime Nintendo creative mastermind. During the interview, Miyamoto spoke, among other things, about his current projects and what creative challenges might appeal to him in the future.

Films Have Been the Focus So Far

Miyamoto is currently deeply involved in filmmaking. He is collaborating with experienced professionals from the film industry and wants to explore the opportunities available to him in this field. At the same time, he seems to be pondering how far he can take his own ideas independently of the usual structures.

In an interview, he explained: “Right now, I’m completely immersed in filmmaking and working with professionals, but I also want to see how far I can go on my own.”

A new game remains an option

Despite his current focus, Miyamoto apparently doesn’t want to leave game development behind for good. Rather, he seems open to working on a game again if the right motivation arises. However, he didn’t mention any specific projects or a possible timeline.

“And in the process, I might try my hand at developing something like a game again,” Miyamoto said in the interview.

Whether this will actually lead to a concrete project remains to be seen.

Nintendo to Surprise with Something Unusual

Miyamoto’s consideration of exploring new creative avenues in the future is particularly interesting. Miyamoto explained that while the development of digital media has made the work more complex, certain processes can now also be completed more quickly. As long as his motivation lasts, he wants to try out different things: “I’m thinking about doing something we don’t normally do at Nintendo and surprising the staff,” he explained.

However, Miyamoto did not reveal exactly what this entails. He also recently commented on the development of artificial intelligence, emphasizing that AI should primarily serve as a supportive tool. Ultimately, he said, what matters is not the effort involved, but the quality and creativity of the finished work.
