Valve is expanding Counter-Strike 2 with scripting interfaces for hostages: CSHostage, event hooks, and new console and GameRules exports give map creators full control over hostage scenarios via scripting. Community servers are reporting initial issues.
On October 22, 2026, Valve rolled out a Counter-Strike 2 update that adds new hostage classes, event hooks, and exports to the map scripting APIs. This is according to the official announcement on Steam.
Hostages Become Fully Scriptable
At the heart of the patch is the new CSHostage class. It offers methods such as IsBeingPickedUp, IsBeingCarried, IsRescued, and GetRescuer, which allow map creators to query the status of individual hostages. In addition, there are six new event hooks on the instance object: OnHostagePickUpStart, OnHostagePickUpAbort, and OnHostagePickUp for picking up a hostage; OnHostageDrop for dropping a hostage; OnHostageRescue for rescuing a hostage; and OnHostageKill for killing a hostage. This makes it possible to program custom maps with hostage scenarios from scratch, rather than relying solely on the default logic: Who picks up a hostage, who rescues them, and who kills them can be queried via script and handled with custom logic.
Another new feature is the CSPrecache object, which can use Instance. Precache to preload assets, ensuring map content is available without lag. According to the patch notes, the element radar_element will now appear on the radar in every game mode, not just in Rush mode.
Console and GameRules as Separate Exports
The update introduces two new top-level exports. Console can read and set convars; the patch notes explicitly state that Console.SetConvar is not restricted by sv_cheats and executes synchronously. The previous method Instance. Msg is now called Console.Log. The GameRules export provides methods for warmup, team score, and ending a round, such as StartWarmup, EndWarmup, GetTeamScore, AddTeamScore, and TerminateRound. According to Valve, renamed methods will continue to work in their old locations but are considered deprecated. A crash in GameRules.AddTeamMoney with CSTeamMoneyReason.NONE has also been fixed.
This is already the second CS2 update in eight days: The previous patch was released on October 14, 2026, following the same weekly schedule. Users on Reddit are reporting issues with community servers and tools like Refrag and warmupserver following the patch; these reports are isolated user accounts and have not been confirmed by Valve.
Counter-Strike 2 is free to play on Steam for Windows and Linux; Valve’s handling of the CS2 community was also recently a topic of discussion when the studio rejected allegations made by the New York Attorney General.
