Bartosz Sztybor is quite happy that Season 2 of *Cyberpunk: Edgerunners* clearly distances itself from David and Lucy’s story.
The song “I Really Wanna Stay at Your House” still leaves Cyberpunk: Edgerunners fans breathless. Now, expectations are high that Season 2 of the Netflix series, premiering on October 20, 2026, will inflict similarly devastating emotional damage.
But that won’t be happening with David Martinez or Lucy Kushinada anymore: Their story has come to an end, and instead, the upcoming episodes will revolve around a new crew. For example, the Edgerunner Weak Kingsley, the Netrunner D, the ex-Corpo Talia Yang, and the rookie reporter Roman Carax.
Bringing David back for Season 2? Not a good idea, according to the Edgerunners showrunner
According to Bartosz Sztybor—the showrunner and driving force behind the Netflix series—there were still quite a few fans who would have liked to see some familiar faces return. In an interview with GamesRadar, he reveals that there was certainly some pressure from the community, but it didn’t sway his position:
Receiving dozens of messages every day asking to bring David back can put pressure on you. But it was clear to me from the start: No, [the second season] has to offer something different to stay true to the source material.
Even if the entire audience wants David back, I think they don’t really want that. Because if they got exactly that, they’d be disappointed.
But the decision to distance himself from established and beloved characters wasn’t an easy one for Sztybor either:
It still keeps me up at night. But Season 2 is different. It’s so different that even the people who fell in love with Edgerunners will be surprised. So I feel all the pressure. And I have nightmares.
But I’m incredibly proud of the decision to take a chance on something completely different. And that I didn’t back down from it. [Our animation studio] Trigger was a huge help in this. This rebellious approach […] was immensely helpful.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether Season 2 of Edgerunners can live up to fans’ high expectations. Because a major change took place behind the scenes as well: Veterans from Studio Trigger and the first season have handed the reins over to the next generation of talent. And now they really get to prove themselves.
Season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premieres on October 20, 2026, on Netflix and will once again consist of a total of eight episodes. Unsurprisingly, the series returns to Night City, and this time the focus is on a new cast of characters.
