Diablo 5 was suddenly announced at BlizzCon 2026, and a character from the very beginning is set to return.
BlizzCon, Blizzard’s nearly annual fan convention, will take place this year from September 12 to 13, 2026, in Anaheim, California. Traditionally, the event kicks off with big shows where the game publisher gives a preview of its upcoming games, expansions, and updates.
And oh man, there was a really huge surprise: Diablo 5 was officially announced!
A Legend Returns
Blizzard doesn’t have too much information for us yet, but luckily we aren’t left completely in the dark.
What is known about the content? Blizzard made it clear that the eponymous main antagonist, Diablo—also known as Lord of Terror
—will return. Aside from Diablo 4, the character has appeared as the final boss in every main game and even made an appearance in Immortal. After a hiatus in Diablo 4, he makes his grand return in Part 5.
What is known about the story? Diablo 5 takes place after Diablo’s victory—that is, after the apocalypse—and Sanctuary has completely fallen. The Diablo developers on stage revealed that the game revolves around the following question: What must you be when the world has already fallen?
When will the game be released? Diablo 5 is scheduled for release in spring 2029. It is not yet known which platforms will be supported.
Why is the announcement surprising? Given that twelve years passed between the releases of Diablo 2 (2000) and Diablo 3 (2012), and then another eleven years until Part 4 (2023), few people were expecting a new installment this decade. In addition, Diablo 4 continues to receive regular updates with new content, including major story expansions.
