The Definitive Edition of the action game does not include a traditional game card. Full details on the release, content, and upgrade path.

The Definitive Edition of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity for the Nintendo Switch 2, announced this week during Nintendo Direct, will be released exclusively on a game key card.

It was already clear in Japan at the time of the announcement that this would be the case. There appear to be no differences in this regard in the West.

The retailer VGP confirms in a social media post that the title will also be released on a game key card outside of Japan.

Nintendo’s Approach to Game Key Cards

This isn’t the first Nintendo-owned title to be released exclusively on a Game Key card—Pokémon Pokopia was previously released this way. Virtually all of the company’s other games have been released entirely on a software card. It’s unclear why Hyrule Warriors and the latest Pokémon spin-off are exceptions.

Game Key cards are controversial among collectors of physical editions. Unlike standard software cards, you have to download the entire game. One advantage over a download code included in a box is that the Game Key card can be resold.

Technical Upgrade and Devastation Mode: What the Definitive Edition Offers

On the Nintendo Switch 2, the Definitive Edition includes all content from the Expansion Pass. In addition to improved graphics and frame rate, you can also expect battles with even more enemies. A new feature is the “particularly challenging” Devastation Mode.

The Definitive Edition is scheduled for release on February 25, 2027. Existing save data from the Switch version can be transferred, and you can upgrade to the new version.
