A new collection featuring most of the Kingdom Hearts games is currently causing a stir—because Donald Duck has more fingers than he should.
Ever since the first animated film featuring Mickey Mouse, Steamboat Willie, was released in 1928, classic Disney characters have had one thing in common:four fingers on each hand!This applies to Mickey just as much as it does to Goofy, Minnie, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and of course Donald Duck.
The duck in the sailor suit made his first appearance in 1934 and looks a little different now. But even back then, Donald had only three fingers and a thumb.
It is precisely this long-standing trait, however, that is now causing a minor scandal. Becausefollowing the announcement of the Kingdom Hearts Collectionfans quickly noticed that something was wrong with Donald’s hands.
Does Donald Duck now have five fingers?
Yet the criticism isn’t actually directed at the games themselves. After all, the collection simply includes (almost) all the games released so far in the long-running JRPG series from Square Enix and Disney. Of course, no effort was made to adjust Donald Duck’s number of fingers for this collection.
The criticism revolves solely around the box cover of the Kingdom Hearts Collection. Take a look at Donald Duck’s hand there. And not his left hand (as seen from your perspective), buthis right hand:

The clenched fist clearly shows four fingers and a thumb. That’s one finger too many! Especially since Donald, as usual, has only four fingers on his other hand.
As is often the case, this led Kingdom Hearts fans to only one conclusion:The artwork was created using AI.
Controversy Over AI Art
Fans are currently swarming the artwork on social media andexpressing their disappointment that Square Enix apparently relied on AI generation to some extent for this.The five fingers on Donald’s hand are the most obvious clue, but there are other details that support this conclusion:

There are also doubts regarding the background and some details, such as chains or zippers. Square Enix itself has not yet commented on this.
Of course, this is ultimately “just” cover art, and there likely won’t be any AI content in the game itself. After all, this is really just a collection of older games. The first Kingdom Hearts was released in 2002, while the latest installment came out in 2019.
However, the collection also includes an exclusive Keyblade for each platform. For example, the Midnight Blue Keyblade for the PS5, the Phantom Green Keyblade for the Xbox Series, and the Long Night Keyblade for the Switch. Theoretically, this new content could also have been created with AI assistance. The question, however, is always to what extent.
By the way, a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 was also shown during the Nintendo Direct. However, the sequel still does not have a release date.
