Netflix is dedicating a new TV series to Scooby-Doo and has cast a real puppy for the role. But some fans would have preferred less realism for the Great Dane.
Now the cat—er, the dog—is out of the bag. Because Netflix isn’t putting a CGI Great Dane in front of the new actors playing Shaggy and the gang, but rathera real dog. And there’s already a first photo and even a first mini-teaser:

The little puppy sparks heated discussions
Unsurprisingly, the new Scooby isn’t just elicitingAww
’s andOoh
’s. As is often the case, die-hard fans have some criticism. Specifically, they argue that a real dog simply couldn’t pull off Scooby-Doo’s over-the-top gestures and facial expressions.
For example, Damien-kaion Reddit (and is thereforenot alone):
This is a good example of how too much realism can completely ruin the vibe. I’d much rather have the exaggerated, silly Scooby from the first two live-action films than just a regular dog.
Similarly, there is criticism that the dog is not a Great Dane but a Labrador …which is nonsense– as, for example,ca11mebilesor Gravecydeconfirm. In fact, puppies of Scooby’s breed look exactly like this; the little one simply still has a bit of growing to do.
Another point of discussion is the fact that the young Scooby actor does not havethe upright earsthat his animated predecessor usually has. However, plenty of animal lovers are already pushing back—for example, here, hereor here.&
By nature, Great Danes have floppy ears, unless they are deliberately cropped by humans. However, this isa process that is very painful for dogs and sharply criticized by animal rights activists, and it is prohibited by law in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
