Amazon takes over from here
Wait a minute, Amazon? Isn’t 007 First Light from IO Interactive, the Hitman developers? That’s absolutely correct! Amazon didn’t even act as the publisher for the action game; the Hitman studio handled both development and distribution.
When Amazon acquired the Bond IP in 2022, the deal for 007 First Light and IO Interactive was already a done deal. However, upcoming games now fall under the purview of the industry giant.
In conversation withPolygonAmazon Games head Jeff Gattis reveals initial gaming plans for the spy franchise:
We didn’t have the full rights to this First Light James Bond game. […] The sequels will be made by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios [Editor’s note: The exact wording: “will be done by MGM …”].
It’s not entirely clear whether this means IO Interactive is also stepping down as developer. However, MGM or Amazon will likely at least take over publishing.
We are observing this ongoing convergence of video, film, and video games, with the boundaries becoming increasingly blurred. We see this as a real opportunity for us to create intellectual property that complements—or, in a sense, expands upon—TV series and films.
With this, Amazon is continuing the strategy already implemented with Tomb Raider. The planned streaming series will run parallel to the new games. Gattis also reveals that additional games are in the works that are linked to a Prime Video IP.
In 2022, Amazon not only acquired the Bond license but also, as of early 2025, full creative control over the charming secret agent. Previously, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson set the direction and, among other things, strongly opposed annual spin-offs. You can find out more about this and what the future holds for James Bond in general above.
