Did Rockstar forget to delete all traces of the new feature? Fans claim to have found something suspicious in GTA Online, but it quickly turns out to be old code.

Anyone who’s ever played a GTA game has almost certainly been on the in-game police’s wanted list. Maybe you raced through Los Santos for minutes on end and hid in the tunnel until the five flashing stars faded away.

The fact that Grand Theft Auto 6 will also feature such a system is about as surprising as a wheel of fortune in a casino. Leaks and rumors promise a realistic approach with a police force that can remember important details. Now, a fan claims to have found concrete evidence of one of these features in GTA Online, and several news sites have reported on it.However, it appears to be a hoax.

What caused the confusion?

This Reddit post caused a stir when someone shared asupposed remnantof a GTA 6 test in GTA Online: the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which can be used to identify each individual vehicle.

According to the original post, this system does not yet exist in the single-player GTAs or GTA Online. However, another poster has sinceclarified that this is not code accidentally copied from GTA 6, but rather a component that has been part of GTA Online since 2013—that is, since its launch. However, the text message is only visible under certain circumstances for stolen vehicles with a CHASSIS4 slot.

Presumably, a feature that was originally planned was scaled back or scrapped, and the remaining code stayed in GTA Online.

For GTA 6, this means we’ll have to keep waiting for the big gameplay reveal. According to Rockstar and Take-Two, summer 2026 is set to answer many burning questions. However, there are still no concrete dates for this. The release date of November 19, 2026, remains on the schedule—and the entire industry is eagerly awaiting that day.
