If you want to fight Warhammer battles on your kitchen table, you usually have to grab a paintbrush first. Not only the miniatures, but the battlefield itself needs to be painted. But in the future, it might get easier.
The pen is mightier than the sword, and the paintbrush comes before the bolter. Or something like that. The point is: Anyone who wants to lead their Warhammer 40k armies into battle must first demonstrate patience and skill. Because both the miniatures and the battlefields themselves need to be painted; official sets are always delivered in unappealing, gray plastic.
Anyone with experience in tabletop gaming or model building knows: This takes an enormous amount of time and money. But Warhammer fans may soon be able to save at least some time:Because in the future, painted terrain will also be sold!
Barely leaked, already announced
The announcement of the painted terrain was preceded by leaked images that were shared on Reddit. Shortly thereafter, the official Warhammer channel on YouTube posted a very short video. This already shows us some elements up close:
Although the video is only about 40 seconds long, it already shows some of the terrain elements in detail. Among other things, you can see a large building ruin, various cables and computers, as well as an electrified fence.
All elements are painted with great attention to detail; even the smallest details stand out in color. In some cases, labels or symbols are also visible, and the displays on the screens can even be made out.
Of course, it’s not yet clear whether the pre-painted terrain will actually be delivered in such high quality. Information is generally scarce: the only images come from the short video, and a release date and prices for the colored terrain are still unknown.
However, the pieces are unlikely to be cheap if they are indeed painted with such care. Those who have chosen Warhammer as a hobby are probably used to spending money, though.
So, good news for everyone who still has just enough patience and time to paint their miniatures. For those who enjoy seeing Space Marines and Orks not only on the table but also on the screen, there’s even more exciting stuff to discover here. For example, two new strategy games set in the Warhammer universe: Dawn of War 4 and Total War: Warhammer 40k.
