Everything points to the DMZ mode playing a central role in Modern Warfare 4.
Call of Duty 2026 hasn’t been officially announced yet. However, it’s an open secret that Infinity Ward is returning with a new installment in the Modern Warfare series, which began with the MW reboot in 2019.
In the meantime, there have already been several leaks and insider details surrounding Modern Warfare 4!
Now, new information has emerged suggesting a major comeback for DMZ—a mode that had been almost completely forgotten since December 2023.
An update no one saw coming
To the community’s great surprise, a major update for DMZ was released on May 1, 2026, initially goingcompletely unnoticed by many.
While the patch didn’t add any new content, it brought immense improvements to server stability and fixed several causes of crashes, lag, and exploits.
Why is this relevant? There are several reasons:
- The DMZ update was developed and released directly by Infinity Ward, not by a support developer—meaning the very CoD studio currently working on Modern Warfare 4, which is expected to launch in October 2026.
- It is the first DMZ update since support was discontinued in December 2023. DMZ had never left beta status, was effectively considered defunct, and was no longer included in the entire release cycle of MW3, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7.
The fans’ conclusion:
The community is certain that Infinity Ward is currently laying the groundwork for a DMZ comeback. This also suggests that the developers are using Modern Warfare 2 as the foundation for MW4 and upgrading the engine, since PS4 and Xbox One no longer need to be supported. MW2 (and its Free2Play spin-off DMZ) were Infinity Ward’s last projects before work began on CoD 2026.
Old Foundation, New Gameplay
The developers also announced that DMZ will receive further updates in the coming weeks—an unusual move by CoD standards for a four-year-old spin-off.
As CoD YouTuberIceBurgz reports, weapon leaks from the yet-to-be-released MW4 appeared in MW2 shortly after the first DMZ update:
His conclusion:The developers are currently working directly on the files from MW2 and DMZ to turn them into Modern Warfare 4 and the new DMZ mode.
Instead of having to develop a completely new foundation, they are using the existing structures, which gives them more time for gameplay systems, more content, and better optimization, according to his theory.
CoD Extraction, Second Attempt
The community has been speculating for months about a relaunch of DMZ as a key cornerstone of the MW4 release package. At the time, DMZ was considered an extremely solid, though not quite polished, foundation for an extraction shooter in the CoD universe.
AI, driving physics, quest and faction systems, as well as good map design, provided (along with the phenomenal gunplay from MW2) an exciting foundation for a more action-packed alternative to Tarkov, Hunt & Co., which was then, however, neglected.
Updates for Warzone and Multiplayer took higher priority, causing DMZ to slowly but surely be sidelined and never leave the beta phase.
It would be highly likely that Activision wants to make a new attempt at DMZ amid the current hype surrounding extraction shooters with titles like Arc Raiders. There is no official information on any of this yet. A reveal of MW4 is expected in late May or early June.
