Significant progress has been made in PC performance since the release of “Borderlands 4” in fall 2025. The developers at Gearbox have outlined in a recent update how they have addressed the technical issues that initially plagued the game. Despite a successful launch, the game saw a dramatic 96% drop in its player base within two months, largely due to performance issues.

Significant performance improvements

Gearbox has released several updates that address specific performance issues. According to a blog post on the official “Borderlands 4” website, the average FPS values have been increased by around 20%. On systems that only meet the minimum requirements, the frame rate increased from an average of 37.32 to 52.79 FPS. On a high-end PC with an RTX 4090, the frame rate increased from 54.96 to 78.43 FPS without any loss of visual quality.

Technical optimizations

In addition to the general performance improvements, other technical issues have also been fixed. Gearbox reported that the frequency of stuttering has been significantly reduced and the rate of game crashes has been lowered to just 0.38% of all game sessions. The display of the many unique weapons in the game has also been optimized to increase the efficiency of the graphics drivers. Gearbox plans to continue providing weekly patches and monthly updates to continuously improve game performance.

Future of the Switch 2 version

While PC players will benefit from these improvements, the release of the Switch 2 version of “Borderlands 4” is on hold indefinitely. Gearbox has paused work on this version to focus more resources on optimizing the PC, PS5 and Xbox versions. Nintendo fans will therefore have to wait until they can experience the game on their preferred console.
