Traditionally, every Diablo game is played from a top-down perspective. One guy is seriously trying to switch to a first-person perspective.

Since the first Diablo, the camera perspective has always been fixed. We look down on our heroes from a diagonal angle and watch them wreak havoc among the demons of hell.

But there have always been ideas to change that.
For example, the canceled Project Hades was supposed to venture into new territory shortly after Diablo 3. There was talk of a third-person game that was somewhat reminiscent of Dark Souls. Now, a solo developer is making another attempt and wants to turn Diablo 2 into a first-person role-playing game.
He is known on YouTube as  I Make Games and has been regularly uploading short gameplay videos for several weeks now, which, thanks to Unreal Engine 5, also look quite appealing graphically:

What exactly will it be?

The scenes shown are not, as is so often the case, a pure tech demo in the Unreal Engine. The developer actually plans to create a game here. He documents his progress in developer diaries and asks the community directly what they hope to see in such a game.
The scenes shown are already receiving a warm reception. It seems many Diablo fans have been waiting for exactly this kind of experimental action RPG. Of course, the developer primarily uses the familiar music, as well as a Diablo-inspired interface. The sound effects will also sound familiar to some.
A few impressive physics effects are also cool. For example, when a fireball crashes into a demon in this first-person Diablo, it properly dismembers the beast. In a developer diary, the solo dev also raises the prospect of switching from first-person to third-person.

Above all, he makes a lot of suggestions and wants to find out what people are most interested in. Currently, he still uses the Marketplace for many assets. According to him, AI is hardly used at all. Only the meshes of some characters were apparently AI-generated.

Is this a realistic project?

The developer is definitely serious about this and seems to have some ambitions. However, he is also aware that he can’t just make a Diablo remake and then sell it.

According to him, there is a little hope that Blizzard will jump on the bandwagon itself. The developer hopes that Blizzard will recognize the potential and interest of the community and then want to implement such a game itself.
But he’s also open to turning the Diablo project into a completely standalone game. According to him, that depends entirely on what the fans want. So whether it remains a fan project or becomes a full-fledged game depends on the feedback.
