Sony is expected to release fewer games on PC in the future—according to a former Microsoft manager, the Steam Machine is the reason for this.

Sony is reportedly reconsidering its current exclusivity policy because of the Steam Machine.

According to a report, Sony is considering no longer releasing new single-player games on PC. A former Microsoft employee has a theory about what might be behind this.

Sony prepares for the Steam Machine

The days of the great “console wars” are actually over. For a few years now, Sony has been releasing hits such as Ghost of Tsushima and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC with a slight delay, and Microsoft has also softened the platform boundaries with PS5 releases of series such as Forza, Gears of War, and Flight Simulator.

However, this cozy relationship could soon be a thing of the past. Recently, well-known US journalist and industry insider Jason Schreier reported that Sony intends to continue porting multiplayer titles such as Helldivers 2 and Marathon to PC in the future, but will no longer port single-player hits such as the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine.

This report is, of course, being discussed intensively online. Mike Ybarra, former president of Blizzard and corporate vice president for Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass, has also commented on the rumors on X.

According to Ybarra, this move would make perfect sense from Sony’s point of view. Xbox has clearly been beaten, and now they are preparing for the next competitor. Sony sees Valve with the Steam Machine and SteamOS as the next “opponent.”

Valve actually wants to conquer the living room with the Steam Machine, and it has a good chance of doing so. Steam already has both the largest game catalog and the most users of any gaming platform.

Add to that regular sales, a fair return policy, and free multiplayer. In the future, Ybarra also expects more SteamOS consoles from third-party manufacturers, which could then include budget and high-end options.

This could make things difficult for Sony. The move back to exclusive games is therefore only logical. The PlayStation business continues to be strongly linked to console sales.

And that’s where Sony relies on strong brands and characters. According to a patent, Kratos and Co. could even host AI podcasts tailored to users in the future.

When the Steam Machine is released, the Japanese company will probably still be able to point to its significantly lower purchase price. However, as the PS5 Pro with its starting price of €800 has shown, this could change again in the future.
