Chip production by TMSC and Nvidia in the US has reached series production.

Under the slogan “Made in the USA,” the US government has been trying for some time to shift the production of goods and components from countries such as China and Taiwan to the United States.

While the new strategic direction poses major problems for companies such as Apple, Nvidia is already one step ahead.

This week, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the first Blackwell wafer, which was manufactured by Taiwanese company TMSC at a chip factory in Arizona. Nvidia itself reports this in a blog post.

In detail:

  • The production of Blackwell wafers has reached series production at the plant in the US.
  • In the future, production will also include two and three nanometer chips as well as A16 chips.

Good to know: Wafers are circular discs. They are used to make semiconductor chips, such as Nvidia’s Blackwell chips.

Until now, Nvidia has primarily had Blackwell wafers produced at the TMSC Fab-18 and Fab-20 chip factories in Taiwan. Series production there began some time ago.

Production in the USA

In a speech, the Nvidia CEO confirms the historic moment for the companies involved and for manufacturing in the US.

This is a historic moment for several reasons. It is the first time in recent US history that the most important chip is being manufactured here in the United States by the most advanced factory, TSMC. This is President Trump’s vision for reindustrialization – bringing manufacturing back to America to create jobs, but also because this is the most important manufacturing industry and the most significant technology sector in the world. For Nvidia, the production of the first wafers is only the first step in a grand plan. According to its own statements, Nvidia wants to invest up to $500 million in the United States over the next few years.

Two more chip factories, in Houston and Dallas, are in the design phase and could be completed as early as next year. However, Nvidia is not working with TMSC on these, but with Foxconn and Wistron. Additional factories with partner companies such as Amkor and SPIL are also reportedly in the planning stages.
