The PlayStation 6 is slowly but surely coming into focus. An insider now claims to have learned the release date.

Sony and AMD have unveiled the cornerstones of the next PlayStation generation in an exciting presentation. The only thing missing was the release date for the new console. A well-known insider may have revealed this in the aftermath.

Sony’s PS6 plans are said to be finalized

Under the title “Project Amethyst,” Sony and AMD have been working closely together for some time to shape the future of gaming and hardware architecture. The next PlayStation is, of course, a particular focus.

On October 9, 2025, PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny and AMD vice president Jack Huynh presented the first results of this collaboration, which will form the foundation of the PlayStation 6:

  • Neural Arrays: More efficient AI upscaling through intelligently networked CUs
  • Radiance Cores: Dedicated hardware blocks that only handle ray tracing calculations
  • Universal Compression: Data transferred to memory is to be compressed more comprehensively than before

Three exciting ideas, the feasibility of which still needs to be proven, of course. The PlayStation 6 is likely to be the first, though possibly not the only, use case. The question of whether the new technologies could also be used in other devices, such as a second Steam Deck, was deliberately left open.

Unsurprisingly, the presentation sparked intense discussion. In the popular forum NeoGAF speculates on what this could ultimately mean for the performance of the next generation of consoles compared to the current generation and current gaming PCs.

The well-known AMD insider KeplerL2 also weighs in on the forum. In response to a user’s comment that a release “is planned for 2027,” KeplerL2 replies:

It’s not just planned, it’s the plan, barring any unexpected delays.

Of course, this is not an official statement, but it at least sounds as if the insider is confident enough to make such a public claim. It would also fit in with the previous schedule for Sony consoles. While there were six years between two consoles up to the PS3, there have been seven years since then.

The PS5 was released at the end of 2020, so a successor in 2027 would fit. If Sony sticks to its previous pattern, the console is also likely to be released in the fall, probably in November.
