The latest developer blog on Europa Universalis 5 takes a detailed look at the fundamental overhaul of exploration and colonization. The new system now incorporates the population and character systems to make the gaming experience more authentic and profound.

Each expedition now requires the selection of a character as leader from a pool of historical and generic personalities. Preparing for a voyage is also an important factor, as the fleet must be equipped with the right resources, such as wood and provisions, before setting sail.
The duration and success of an expedition depend on the leader’s experience and the progress of maritime technology.
Over 1,000 nations: This is how big EU5 really is.

A key element is the new geopolitics page, where players can see all colonization and exploration options at a glance. Colonial reach determines how far players can extend their power. Colonization is a slow process that requires the monthly influx of populations from the home province. To secure territories, players must settle enough pops in a race against rival nations. Upon successful colonization, players have the choice of either ruling the new territories directly or establishing an autonomous colony.
Europa Universalis 5 launches on November 4, 2025.
