A short film is to introduce the world and story of Battlefield 2042. But this is just the beginning.

Those hoping for a single-player campaign in Battlefield 2042 are out of luck: DICE has decided not to include a story mode in the upcoming shooter. Nevertheless, a story is to be told in Battlefield 2042. And maps will help to tell it.

How Battlefield 2042 tells its story

Exodus: The prequel to Battlefield 2042

What is Exodus about? There are currently no concrete details about the Battlefield short film. However, we already know the framework story for the game: In the near future of the year 2042, humanity is driven to the brink by environmental disasters and a new economic crisis. As a result, several nations have been dissolved, turning their inhabitants into refugees. Exodus aims to delve deeper into this backstory.

Who are No-Pats? Former soldiers now band together as so-called “No-Pats” (short for “Non-Patriated”), who intervene as mercenaries in the conflict between the USA and Russia over the world’s last resources. These No-Pats are the playable Specialists.

When and where will Exodus be released? The Battlefield 2042 short film is scheduled to be released on 12 August 2021 at 5pm German time. Exodus will be available to watch for free on YouTube – so you don’t have to subscribe or pay any money to find out more about the Battlefield 2042 back story

This is how the story of BF2042 will be retold

DICE won’t leave it at a short film before the launch of Battlefield 2042, though. Despite the lack of a single-player campaign, the lore and universe will continue to build and expand, similar to Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege or even Apex Legends.

Here’s what it will look like:

Ingame Story: On the one hand, the story of Battlefield 2042 will be embedded in the multiplayer mode. For example, we will learn more about the Battlefield 2042 universe through the Specialists and their backstories, and in-game events and map events such as the rocket launch on the Orbital map will tell more about the 2042 universe. As with CoD Warzone, the Battle Pass and Seasons are part of an overarching narrative.

External Story: Last but not least, the story of Battlefield 2042 should also be expanded outside of the actual game, as is the case now with the Exodus film. Background videos, cinematic trailers or blogposts could be the basis with which DICE keeps its fans up to date. By the way, the first trailer gives a foretaste of the story of Battlefield 2042:
