Do you like apocalyptic settings, a captivating atmosphere, and eating mushrooms that grow in tunnels? Then grab it now!

Steam currently has a real gem for fans of single-player shooters available for free: Metro 2033 Redux! The 2013 shooter is still one of the most atmospheric campaign experiences in the genre – if you love post-apocalyptic scenarios, you should definitely grab this!

Where can you get the gift?

The offer is valid until April 16, 2025, at 5 p.m. local time So you’ll have to hurry.

Why it’s worth it

I played Metro 2033 again last year and can say that it’s still a damn good experience. Not least because of the rich story universe behind it: in the Metro world, nuclear wars have left the surface devastated.

The survivors of the former Russian Federation have sought shelter in the subway tunnels of the big cities and split into dozens of factions.

What’s Metro 2033 about?

As young Artjom, you must venture deep into the dangerous tunnels of the metro to defeat a new threat. Along the way, you will encounter all kinds of human and non-human threats, from simple bandits and paramilitary neo-Nazis to grotesquely mutated monsters.

In terms of gameplay, it’s all fairly standard fare for the genre, i.e. a familiar mix of sneaking, shooting, and exploring, but the dense atmosphere and fascinating story keep you hooked nonetheless. Ironically, the devastated end-time Metro feels incredibly alive, with survivors everywhere trying to make the best of their situation.

Metro 2033 has since been continued several times. Metro: Last Light also takes you back into the Moscow subway tunnels, and the outstanding Metro: Exodus even takes you permanently to the irradiated surface. Incidentally, all three major Metro games are based on books by Dmitri Gluchowski, which are also worth reading as a supplement to the games because they strike a much more philosophical and cultural-historical tone than the very action-packed games.
