Hogwarts Legacy: No DLC, no definitive edition – Warner Bros. is apparently putting a stop to development

The role-playing game was a huge success, but an unannounced expansion is now apparently being canceled by the publisher.

It was one of the most successful video games of 2023. Hogwarts Legacy has sold millions of copies and is even considered one of the best-selling games of all time. With around 34 million sales, it ranks on a similar level to The Sims 4, Breath of the Wild and even Tetris. You would think that an expansion would be the logical consequence!

But think again. To date, no DLC has been officially announced, aside from the Dark Arts Pack included in the Digital Deluxe Edition.

Last year, reliable sources said that Avalanche was indeed working on a major expansion – but now the well-connected industry insider Jason Schreier reports that said add-on has been canceled by publisher Warner Bros., along with the planned Definitive Edition.

According to insider reports, the add-on should bring the following content into the game:

  • 10 to 15 hours of gameplay
  • A new story quest
  • New side quests
  • New activities
  • New outfits

That’s what happened

From the official side; there is no information. Neither whether work on an add-on was ever started nor whether it has now actually been canceled. However, the sources reporting this are very reliable. Jason Schreier is generally considered to be the gaming industry’s most well-connected journalist, with many contacts in the development community.

In this case, Schreier again has first-hand information The talk is of people familiar with the matter who wish to remain anonymous. According to Schreier’s sources, it was Warner Bros. that informed the studio this week that the ongoing development of the expansion will not continue.

But why did Warner Bros. intervene here? According to Schreier’s contacts, Warner expressed concern that the content of the expansion did not have enough substance to justify the planned price for the expansion. The concern here is that not enough people would have been willing to actually buy the expansion.

Unruhige Zeiten bei Warner

Much more than that is not known. However, it fits the picture, as Warner’s gaming division has had to cope with financial setbacks in the millions for some time and has since been extensively restructured. In February, Schreier reported that Warner had to cope with losses of as much as $300 million last year.

The road to these losses is paved with a whole series of flops. Apart from Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1, almost every game from Warner has made a bad crash landing in recent years.

Gotham Knights barely attracted any players to Gotham City in 2022, and in 2024, it was the turn of the expensively produced Suicide Squad to fail spectacularly. Shortly afterwards, the briefly blossoming bubble of MultiVersus burst. Not even Quidditch Champions was a success for the publisher.

For several months, many internal studios and, above all, their employees have been feeling the consequences. In September, Rocksteady (Suicide Squad) laid off staff, in December, 100 people were laid off at Warner Bros. Montreal (Gotham Knight), and in February 2025, Warner closed three studios, including Monolith (Mordors Schatten).

Nevertheless, the presumed cancellation of a Hogwarts Legacy expansion comes as a bit of a surprise. After all, we’re talking about the one game that Warner has had sensational success with.

At least the publisher still seems to be pursuing plans to develop Hogwarts Legacy 2, which the publisher attested to be a top priority in September. By the way, if you’re looking for new content for Hogwarts Legacy, the game has had mod support on PC for some time now.
