Sony is taking the bold step of bringing two of its most successful game series into the world of live-action movies. At CES 2025, the company confirmed that both will be made into films. This decision reflects the enormous popularity of both franchises, which have not only thrilled players, but are also commercial successes. While Helldivers 2 was only recently released to great acclaim, Horizon: Zero Dawn received a remaster in October 2024 that brought the captivating story of Aloy back into focus.

Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, emphasized the importance of these projects. He also pointed out that the film adaptation of Helldivers 2 is taking place in collaboration with Sony Pictures. He added that Horizon: Zero Dawn is a project with enormous potential, which is being realized in cooperation with Columbia Pictures. It is particularly exciting to experience Aloy’s epic journey in a futuristic world full of gigantic machines on the big screen.

Two worlds, two unique stories

The story of Horizon: Zero Dawn offers cinematic appeal even in its game version. Aloy, a brave outsider, discovers a technological artifact that helps her to see the weaknesses of the machine-like beings. Her search for the truth about her origins and the reasons for her exclusion from the tribe unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world full of dangers and wonders. The cinematic realization promises to be an emotionally and visually impressive journey.

In contrast, the film adaptation of Helldivers 2 could be an action-packed satire with humorous social criticism. The game, known for its cooperative missions and charming, biting humor, could shine on the big screen with explosive scenes and a wink. Both films serve different tastes, but they are united by their goal of realizing the cinematic potential of the PlayStation worlds. Fans can look forward to seeing how Sony brings these iconic stories to life.
