Last weekend, the final of the European League of Legends premier league took place in Munich for the first time. In the end, the LEC fans were presented with a familiar picture

League of Legends in Europe is a simple game. Five players try to tear down the base of the opposing five players and G2 always wins in the end.

Gary Lineker’s oft-quoted bon mot (“…and in the end the Germans always win”) would probably read something like this if the former England international striker had become a LoL commentator rather than a footballer after his active career.

Because with 17 titles to their name, G2 Esports took the European crown once again last Sunday at the LEC Season Finals. What is particularly impressive is that they are the first team since the introduction of the new format for the 2023 season to win the Winter, Spring and Summer Split as well as the final Season Finals. And thus won everything there was to win this season

A roundabout way to the title hat-trick

So the designated champion first had to take a detour via the Lower Bracket

This was followed by a dominant 3-0 win over GIANTX, a near-sensation when they narrowly escaped early elimination with a 3-2 win over Team BDS in the quarter-finals, a 3-1 rematch against MAD in the semi-finals and finally – once again – arch-rivals Fnatic in the final.

In the last best-of-five series of the tournament, things got heated right from the start.

In the longest LoL match ever between G2 and Fnatic, G2 won the first game after 51 minutes and 16 seconds. Although FNC responded in Game 2 and evened the series at first, in the end they were left with this one victory, as G2 won Game 3 and 4

Next Stop: Berlin

With the league coming to a close, the focus now shifts from Munich to Berlin, where the World Championship in League of Legends will take place from September 25 with the Worlds 2024. Logically, G2 will be the top seed in the European region.

The last time they reached the final was in 2019, but G2 has never actually won the Worlds title. It remains to be seen whether the saying inspired by Gary Lineker’s LoL eSports will still hold true after the grand final on November 2
