Without the internet, the Nintendo Switch can only be used to a limited extent. Because Nintendo knows this too, there is now an update to get rid of a Wi-Fi problem

Nintendo has rolled out an update for the Switch. What’s special this time: The update not only brings the typical optimizations for system stability, but also fixes a bug that causes connection problems with the Wi-Fi.

Why is this important?  A stable internet connection is almost essential for using the Nintendo Switch.

  • Popular games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Splatoon 2 offer online modes that require an internet connection.
  • Games can be downloaded from the Nintendo eShop via an internet connection.
  • The only way to access mobile data with the Switch is via other devices using a hotspot.

In detail: The update is version 18.0.1. The official patch notes from Nintendo show in detail what the update delivers.

  • A bug with the Wi-Fi has been fixed. This meant that no access points could be found when setting up a wireless network.
  • In addition, the general system stability has been increased.
  • According to the Dataminer Oatmeal Dome nothing else has changed under the hood

How to install the update: According to Nintendo, the update should install automatically on your Switch. Alternatively, the process can also be initiated manually:

  1. Go to the system settings of the console.
  2. Select the submenu System → System Update from. The system then checks whether updates are available and starts them automatically.

If you are unable to install the update for any reason, Nintendo provides an alternative: Apparently, the error can also be eliminated if you temporarily only allow your network to use the slightly older security standard WPA2 (AES) in the security settings.

What comes after the Switch?  For months the rumor mill has been buzzing about a Switch successor from Nintendo. However, after several internal postponements, the console is now not due to be released until spring 2025.

However, it is unclear whether the successor will continue and optimize the Switch’s form factor or take a completely new approach to set itself apart from other consoles.
