No Far Cry 7 for a long time? A dataminer contradicts other sources who shared contrary information months ago

If a leaker is right, a Far Cry 7 could be a long time coming. The Dataminer channel ScriptLeaksR6, best known for leaks on Rainbow Six: Siege, but also Assassin”s Creed Mirage or Avatar, claims on (Twitter) the following:

Development of Far Cry 7 has not begun.

If this is true, a full-fledged series part is still several years away. If you look at Ubisoft”s release strategy so far, a smaller spin-off would have to follow Far Cry 6 from 2021 anyway. Although we wouldn”t necessarily bet our tropical island on it either.

Important: The information has not been officially confirmed. Most publishers categorically do not comment on rumours and leaks.

The dataminer thus contradicts other insiders such as Tom Henderson, whose sources claim that Far Cry 7, alongside a multiplayer title, is already in development.

Ubisoft in Tubulences

Whatever leakers are right: There are indeed many adjusting screws moving at Ubisoft at the moment. Many games had to be postponed in the wake of the pandemic and for other reasons, for example Skull & Bones has been waiting forever.

Other titles have been put on hold completely after being announced, for example Ghost Recon Frontline. Released games sometimes fell short of expectations.

However, Far Cry is actually one of the French publisher”s most successful games, with Part 6 achieving as many sales as Assassin”s Creed Odyssey in one release period.

So it can be highly doubted, to say the least, that Ubisoft would entertain the idea of discontinuing the Far Cry series altogether. However, a change in strategy or new direction that would be accompanied by a delay in development would be entirely plausible.

After all, open worlds have long been criticised by Ubisoft for being too formulaic and generic in design. Fans would certainly not be averse to experiencing a Far Cry with a bit more fresh air. Or a shooter that is more attuned to its own roots.

But only time will tell whether one or the other leaker is right (or none of them).

What would you like to see in the future of Far Cry? More of the same, more daring experiments (survival?) or a return to old values? Feel free to write it in the comments!
