At GDC 2023, Epic Games demonstrated the new Unreal Engine 5.2 and its strengths. We show you the highlights of the presentation.

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2023 is one of the most important events for game developers. The industry giant Epic was able to make particularly high waves there with its presentation State of Unreal.

Because it wasn”t just developers who were probably wide-eyed at the presentation, which impressively demonstrated the power of the Unreal Engine.

We show you four particularly cool highlights from the presentation, including a video.

The four highlights from the Unreal Engine presentation

Hellblade 2

Let”s get right to it with the biggest banger: Using a tech demo for the upcoming action-adventure Hellblade 2, Epic teamed up with developer studio Ninja Theory to demonstrate just how incredible facial animations can look in games in the not-too-distant future.

Even if the often-described photorealism is not quite achieved yet, a big step is taken here nonetheless. In addition to the Unreal Engine 5, Epic”s Metahuman Creator is also used here.

Lords of the Fallen

The Elden Ring competitor Lords of the Fallen is still scheduled for release in 2023 and shows off several impressive Unreal Engine 5 features in four minutes in the new trailer:

  • Character creation, combining 3D scans of real people and UE 5”s character customisation technology.
  • Unreal Engine”s Chaos Physics Engine adds realism to movements of clothing, hair, chains and more.
  • The Lumen engine illuminates the game world impressively and should only eat up a little performance.
  • The transition between the world of the living and the dead works smoothly and without loading times.

Infinitesimals

Infinitesimals is an action-adventure game in which you fight your way through a garden full of creepy-crawlies – similar to Grounded – in miniature size. In the video, the developers show how they use the features of the Unreal Engine for the scaling of the open world and the smooth transition between day and night.

Unreal Engine 5.2 Techdemo

Finally, here”s a video that demonstrates many of the already mentioned features of the new Unreal Engine 5.2 by means of an off-road drive with a pickup truck. Among other things, there is highly realistic vegetation, cool water and surface effects and remarkable driving physics to marvel at. However, in contrast to the three previous videos, this is not a real game.
