Call of Duty Warzone has ushered in a new wave of excitement in the Battle Royale genre. Is it also the best game in the genre?

Developing a successful battle royale has become like reinventing the wheel. The formula for success already exists: big lobbies, the hunt for loot, the famous circle, which gets smaller and smaller as the game progresses. Games like Fortnite and PUBG have already perfected the genre, yet new titles are constantly appearing.

The famous shooter franchise Call of Duty first launched into the genre in 2018 with Blackout, with today’s global success coming two years later with Warzone. The game built on the foundation of other battle royales and mended some of the genre’s fundamental flaws. Activision made a game that stays.

The slump has been stopped

In Battle Royales, it’s easy to feel lost and stray from one fight to the next. The lulls between fights are filled by looting and running away from the circle. Warzone has creatively plugged these holes and shows players the way during these phases.

The missions function as a kind of mini-game that can add surprise and variety to any game. They give new players an orientation outside of the battles. In addition, the orders create more gunfights, which make the rounds more exciting and bring rewards.

The jump into the action

The concept of the big jump at the beginning of a round is an essential part of the genre. However, being able to control this is an exciting innovation, as the jumps in other games tend to be static. In Warzone, you can control them very well by being able to open and close your parachute freely, which speeds you up horizontally.

The Verdansk ’84 map also offers a lot of variety with wide open spaces and very narrow areas. So the right landing spot is crucial. This allows players to choose their strategy before the round and prepare accordingly.

Loadouts are a lifesaver

In most Battle Royales, players are completely dependent on the loot they find randomly on the map. Even though games like Fortnite have implemented similar systems, only in Warzone can you rely on your own chosen arsenal. Players can create their own loadouts and buy them in a round with enough money collected. This way, Warzone gives you more control over the course of your round again.

Overall, the game moves away from the familiar crafting with the money system. At the buying stations you can get loadouts as well as drones and other equipment. This free choice again gives Warzone an advantage over the competition.

The second chance in the Gulag

Of all the unique features that set Warzone apart from the grey masses, the Gulag is probably the most famous. Killed players can prove themselves in one-on-one battles in the Gulag and get a second chance in Battle Royale with a victory.

In other BRs, teams can be unluckily eliminated right after the start and have to restart. In Warzone, the round is not directly over, so every match can still turn completely.

Will Warzone remain the king of Battle Royales?

In contrast to the competition, achieving first place is not the only motivating factor in Call of Duty. The missions, winning the Gulag, and special events are also fun when better players are making the lobby unsafe for a change. Each match can offer a unique experience.

Currently, Warzone is the number one Battle Royale. Whether its success will last for a long time also depends on Activision’s continued support. But we are sure: Warzone is the best Battle Royale we know so far.
