For the first time EA Sports integrates a fictional club including players and coaches into the FIFA series. This causes mixed reactions.

For the first time in the history of the FIFA series, developer EA Sports integrates a fictional club including players, coach and stadium into the game. Ted Lasso, character from the comedy series of the same name, and his club AFC Richmond will be available in FIFA 23’s career mode as well as in Ultimate Team. EA made the announcement on Wednesday evening.

The “Ted Lasso” series is about American college football coach Ted Lasso, who unexpectedly becomes the coach of fictional Premier League football club AFC Richmond. In FIFA 23 the players can experience Ted Lasso and his club not only in the English league. According to EA, the club will be playable in every league, including the fictional players from the series. Ted Lasso will be available as a playable coach.

Likewise, AFC Richmond will be playable in Kick-Off, as well as Online Seasons and Online Friendlies modes. Ted Lasso and his assistant coach Beard will be available in Ultimate Team, as well as cosmetic items such as jerseys and choreos.

In social media, the announcement caused mixed reactions. Fans of the series were delighted. However, many FIFA players would have liked to see a more complete portfolio of real clubs and leagues before fictional content is integrated into the game. FIFA 23 will be released on 30 September.
