On Reddit, a fan remake of the original 1.0 Minecraft trailer is currently wowing fans. We compare it to the original.

The Minecraft phenomenon has been with us for over a decade now and neither the player numbers nor the enthusiasm of the fans seem to be waning anytime soon. One of them has now gone back to the beginning on Reddit and published a loving remake of the original trailer.

It was made by YouTuber Dennis Vareide and uploaded to the video platform on 15 November 2011. Three weeks later, developer Mojang chose the video as the official trailer for version 1.0.

It was released on 18 November 2011 after two and a half years of development and a long alpha and beta phase. In the unprecedented success story of the block sandbox, however, it was only one milestone of many. The developers recently revealed to us in an exclusive interview how Minecraft intends to remain exciting in 50 years.

Old vs. new

Let’s start with the trailer, which is now almost 11 years old and has accumulated a whopping 161 million views and 1.5 million likes on YouTube. It already captures the fascination that the game has always had, but also its very limited feature set compared to today.

Most of the video takes place in the original forest and meadow biome, because that’s where most players felt at home. The scenic variety was just beginning to find its way into the game back then.

It was not until the last beta update before the release of the full version that the biome generation was fundamentally reworked and nine now significantly more expansive landscape types were introduced, ranging from deserts to swamps to the partly snowy taiga.

The remake makes use of the soundtrack recorded by Dennis Vareide himself as well as the original background music by Olive Musique, but the visuals were recorded with the then current version 1.19 (The Wild Update). For direct comparability, we embed it right here:

It was posted on Reddit by user RedAdventurer11 on 19 June 2022 and you immediately notice the additional biomes as well as the higher variety of materials, animals and blocks. While he sticks to the script provided by the narrator for the first minute, he didn’t miss the opportunity to add 30 more seconds and separately focus on the diversity that was unthinkable 11 years ago.

At the time of this writing, the remake has already garnered 8,600 upvotes and 112 comments, most of which are enthusiastic about the attention to detail. LennyTheSniper, for example, noticed that the bonus material adheres to the actual order of updates 1.7 to 1.18:

  • The icicles represent 1.7
  • The Ocean Monument 1.8
  • The Final Battle 1.9
  • The Tanning Igloo Villager 1.10
  • The Forest Manor 1.11
  • The Rainbow Bridge 1.12
  • The Underwater Suck 1.13
  • The Raid on the Village 1.14
  • The Bee Escort 1.15
  • The Lava Ride on the Rider 1.16
  • The Lightning Rod 1.17
  • The Lush Caves 1.18

What do you think of the remake and did you notice any other hidden details in it? Feel free to write us your impressions in the comments!
