According to insiders, there will be no new Call of Duty in 2023 for the first time in 17 years. Instead, Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 should keep you happy.
2023 the Call of Duty series could break with tradition. This is because next year there will reportedly be no classic new instalment in the series and instead it will only continue in 2024. This would be the first time in 17 years that there would be no annual CoD. But fans need not despair: Warzone 2 is supposed to provide a replacement.
Will there be no real Call of Duty in 2023?
What insiders claim: No new Call of Duty in the classic sense is to be released next year. This is what the established insider Jason Schreier wants to have learned – as the US website (Bloomberg) reports. This would mean that for the first time in 17 years there will be no annual part of the series – the last time this was the case was in 2005.
According to Tuesday’s report, there will be no new Call of Duty game in the main series next year because Activision wants to put more focus on the battle royale Warzone. In addition, Modern Warfare 2 is in the pipeline for release by the end of this year. In addition, another CoD Free2Play online game is rumoured to be coming next year, with developer studio Treyarch helping out.
SCOOP: For the first time in two decades, Call of Duty will skip a year. Activision has delayed 2023’s game, made by Treyarch, to 2024, sources tell Bloomberg. It’s a shocking move that will have a massive impact on the franchise and the industry. https://t.co/tiozvqB1cE

Activision noted the lacklustre sales of Call of Duty: Vanguard, according to the report, pointing to the current release cycle from the franchise as the main problem. It will be the very first time in almost two decades that there will not be an annual CoD game from the main series. Since 2005, there has always been a new title in the franchise.
Why no CoD 2023? According to the Bloomberg report, Call of Duty: Vanguard did not meet Activision’s expectations. Accordingly, they have reportedly concluded that new CoDs are being released too quickly and at too short intervals. The continued popularity of Warzone despite new releases like Black Ops: Cold War and Vanguard may not be entirely innocent of this either.
The purchase of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft for a total of 68.7 billion US dollars is said to have nothing to do with this. According to Schreier, however, it cannot be ruled out that any plans will change again when the deal is closed.
Microsoft buys Activision and things couldn’t be better for us gamers
What does it look like for 2022? CoD fans should not be left high and dry in 2023, even if no classic Call of Duty is to be released this year. Because Activision probably has big plans for 2022, when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is released, which is to be supplied with new content for at least two years.
According to unconfirmed rumours, Modern Warfare 2 will also lay the foundation for Warzone 2, which could be released in 2023. However, this is not a classic Call of Duty, which normally comes with a single-player campaign and 6v6 multiplayer. Bloomberg also refers to a free2play online game for 2023 that is not described further.

CoD Warzone 2 to come as early as 2023 and be a whole new game
Not yet officially confirmed: Last but not least, of course, you should always keep in mind that this is an unconfirmed insider report. Despite a trustworthy and reliable source, this does not necessarily mean that it will come true, for example by plans being scrapped or overturned. So be patient until official information becomes available.
