The dream comes true – but differently than expected
What many players never thought possible is now becoming reality: World of Warcraft is coming to the Xbox. This fulfills a long-held wish of countless fans who would rather experience the legendary MMORPG with a controller than with a mouse and keyboard. But as is so often the case in the gaming universe, the devil is in the details.
According to a report by the industry portal Windows Central, there will be no classic console version of WoW. Instead, the next generation of Xbox will transform into something completely new – a kind of hybrid between a console and a PC. With the full integration of Windows, the Xbox will function like a full-fledged computer in the future. Those who wish to do so can launch various launchers on it, including Battle.net. This opens the door to Azeroth for console gamers for the first time – albeit in an unusual way.
“The Xbox becomes a PC” – Microsoft breaks down old barriers
What sounds like a technical gimmick is actually a radical step: according to Windows Central, the new Xbox will run entirely on Windows for the first time in its history. This means that gamers will be able to launch PC titles directly on the console in the future – including games that have never been released for consoles before. Even World of Warcraft, which has been firmly anchored in the PC world for almost 20 years, will benefit from this.
The move fits perfectly with Microsoft’s strategy of finally blurring the lines between PC and console gaming. The company has long been focusing on cross-play, cloud gaming, and the Xbox app for Windows. With the upcoming console generation, everything will now merge into one ecosystem. This will effectively turn the Xbox into a gaming PC – only smaller, quieter, and “living room-friendly.”
However, it is still unclear when the new model will be released. There has been no official announcement yet, but the community is eagerly awaiting it. After all, the prospect of running through Stormwind on the sofa with a controller has been a dream of many fans for decades.
Whether Blizzard is also planning a “real” console version for PlayStation or Nintendo remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: World of Warcraft has conquered a new continent – that of living room gaming.
