Ubisoft has officially announced the end of the free-to-play shooter XDefiant. As explained in a message on the official Ubisoft site and the company blog, no new downloads or player registrations have been possible since yesterday, December 3. The servers will remain active until June 3, 2025 to give the existing community time to say goodbye.

The journey of XDefiant

According to a statement by Mark Rubin, XDefiant’s Executive Producer, the game was a bold challenge from the start. With over 15 million players during its lifetime, XDefiant initially had impressive success. The concept of offering classic arcade shooter gameplay without skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) had attracted a loyal fan base. Nevertheless, it turned out that the game could not be operated profitably in the long term.

Ubisoft emphasized the importance of honest communication between developers and players throughout the entire development process. Rubin expressly thanked the community for their commitment and support. At the same time, he expressed concern about the impact of this decision on the teams involved.

Refunds for players

To accommodate players, buyers of the Ultimate Founder’s Pack will receive a full refund. All purchases made within the last 30 days will also be refunded. According to Ubisoft, the refund will be made automatically within eight weeks.

Community reaction

XDefiant had major problems pleasing the gaming community from the start. After strong criticism of the game design enormous problems finally followed after release. On the one hand, bugs and cheaters caused great frustration. But the unbalanced matchmaking also gave the community little joy. You can read more about this in the following report and on

Nevertheless, many gamers seem saddened by the end of XDefiant and express their grief at the end of under the official announcement of Ubisoft.

XDefiant remains an example of the challenges in the free-to-play market, especially for innovative projects in a highly competitive genre. However, Ubisoft emphasized that they want to learn from the experience in order to better address the wishes of players in the future.
