Team Fortress 2 is getting new content – at least that’s the most likely interpretation of Valve’s announcement

The last major update to the multiplayer shooterTeam Fortress 2was in 2017, even though Valve released several smaller patches with content after that. However, this did not harm the popularity of the game, which is now almost 18 years old. As recently as July 2023, there was a new player record on Steamwith over a quarter of a million simultaneously active users.

Now there’s a new major update coming to co-op mode, and fans are beside themselves with excitement

TFT 2 announces new update

The announcementon the official website sounds cryptic and strange as usual and begins like this:

Thirteen years ago, we released Man vs. Machine, a chilling tale in which an artificial consciousness tried to take all our jobs. You didn’t know it then, but that was a literary device called “speculative” fiction, where authors (us) accurately predict the future (the present) but then keep it quiet so as not to cause mass panic.

In addition to this joking suggestion that they have predicted the increased use of AI in 2012, there is also some real information in the rest of the announcement.

Theco-op mode Man vs. Machinewas introduced in 2012. Players defend a cargo transport against waves of AI opponents and can buy upgrades between rounds.

This mode is to get new missions and maps and Valve is calling on the community to develop and submit their own. The deadline for this is August 27, 2025

This is also the release date for part 1 of the update. Part 2 is scheduled to be released around Halloween, i.e. on October 31st A spooky theme could be found in some, but not all, of the new content

Valve is not revealing whether there is more to the update.

Fans are thrilled

“The fact that we’re still getting updates after 18 years really amazes me. ”LeverActionShotgun16

“Today I thought: maybe I should try TF2, but isn’t the game slowly dying without updates? So I went into this sub and…. Well, I’ll download the game tomorrow. “Stupidity-Addiction

Team Fortress 2 still has a stable player base today and always has around 55,000 active users. Many players are hoping for new Australium weapons, which can only be earned in co-op mode. Many of the weapons in the game lack such a special variant. However, Valve does not reveal whether this dream will come true in the current announcement.
