Unreal Tournament 2004 is now available to download free of charge. This has been made possible by a community project working with the approval of Epic Games. Not only is the shooter being made available again, but it is also being updated with a fan patch that brings the game to modern systems.

This is the first public update for UT 2004 in more than two decades. For many fans, this is a surprising move, as the title has long been considered a closed chapter in shooter history.

Epic allows hosting via the Internet Archive

In recent years, Epic Games has allowed several classic Unreal titles to be made available via the Internet Archive. These already include Unreal Gold and the original Unreal Tournament.

Now Unreal Tournament 2004 is following suit. The disc image is available at archive.org. The community project OldUnreal is not allowed to host the game itself, but provides an installer that downloads the necessary files from the Internet Archive.

OldUnreal provides patch for modern operating systems

In addition to free access, the community patch is the most important part of the project. It is distributed via GitHub and is intended to bring UT 2004 up to date with current systems.

Improvements for Windows, Linux, and macOS are mentioned. The changes include a new SDL backend for Linux and macOS, a new renderer, and a migration of the code base to modern build systems. At the same time, it is pointed out that such a major overhaul can also lead to new bugs.

Download is multi-stage and requires installer plus patch

Access to UT 2004 is a little more complicated than with classic free downloads. First, you need the OldUnreal installer, which obtains the game from the Internet Archive.

This is followed by the installation of the community patch via GitHub.
Only then will the game run smoothly on modern systems and function in a technically stable manner.
Unreal Tournament 2004 is still considered the highlight of the series.
The game took over the technical basis of UT 2003, but delivered significantly more content and game modes.

The vehicle battles in Onslaught mode were particularly memorable. In addition, the object-based Assault mode, which was missing in UT 2003, made a comeback. A well-known example is the AS Mothership map, which combines space fighter battles with a boarding section.

Online playability possible, restrictions with AntiTCC

It remains to be seen whether UT 2004 will regain a larger multiplayer community. At the same time, bot gameplay is still considered strong, which is why the game still works offline.

According to OldUnreal, the patch should also run online. However, there are restrictions for servers that use AntiTCC.
