Starfield has received a massive update and a second DLC. The RPG also launched on the PS5 on the same day, but it’s apparently causing frustration for many players.
Starfieldis controversial among fans, but not because of a typical Bethesda issue. In fact, there wasn’t much to complain about regarding the tech, performance, and bugs even at launch.
However, things seem to be different with the brand-new PS5 version. Reports of repeated crashes are piling up, ruining the fun for players.
Starfield Stumbles on PlayStation
On Reddit, there are reports of crasheson the standard PlayStation 5are being reported, as well as the PS5 Proalso appears to be affected. Furthermore, these are often not just isolated crashes; players frequently report that the game freezes regularly, forcing them to restart. User ShogunRaw even describes Starfield on the PS5 asunplayable
.
But it’s not just Reddit; the testers at Digital Foundry criticize the PS5 version. The game crashes quite often
on both the PS5 and the PS5 Pro in various modes. Oliver McKenzie emphasizes that this is particularly surprising, as such serious issues did not occur at the release of Starfield in 2023.
It seems, then, that Starfield on PlayStation is in urgent need of some patches. Bethesda itself has not yet commented on the issues, and plans for any updates have not yet been announced either.
For Starfield, these issues on PlayStation come at a time when the RPG is regaining some favor among fans. The major Free Lanes update was very well received by many fans. The new travel mode and improvements to planetary exploration make a big difference for us as well, which is why we upgraded the PC version in our follow-up review!
Those playing on PlayStation, however, will likely have to remain patient. After all, Bethesda isn’t known for releasing updates particularly quickly. Even before the PlayStation version’s release, the developers stated that they intend to continue supporting Starfield even after the Free Lanes update. Improvements are therefore most likely on the way, but they could still take a while.
