So it’s happening after all! As many suspected, Total War: Warhammer is continuing. But after Warhammer 3, it’s set in the sci-fi fantasy universe of 40k.
At the 25th anniversary celebration of Total War, Creative Assembly mysteriously referred to a new announcement at The Game Awards. Now The Game Awards are over and it really happened! Total War: Warhammer 40,000 was officially unveiled with a typically brutal trailer.
Everything you would expect from Total War and, of course, Warhammer 40K is already hinted at here. In epic battles, familiar factions such as the Space Marines and the Orks clash, resulting in a monstrous slaughter.

What you can expect in Total War: Warhammer 40K
Lots of grimacing and shooting – that’s what you can expect in Total War: Warhammer 40K! The team wants to bring this war-torn, violence-ridden universe to life in the same way they did with the fantasy spin-off.
The strategy game is intended to feel just like a traditional Total War game, but now set in the 40K universe, where you fight for galactic supremacy with a faction of your choice. Four factions have already been revealed for the strategy game:
- Space Marines: Of course there are Space Marines! The Empire’s elite soldiers are among humanity’s toughest warriors and are divided into different orders. We don’t yet know exactly which orders will appear in the game.
- Orks: Humankind’s most famous adversaries are the Orks, who crave battle and are more like a kind of fungal creature in this universe that cannot be eradicated.
- Astra Militarium: Like the Space Marines, the Guard also belongs to the Imperium, but forms its primary military power and consists mainly of normal humans. Its strength lies in the sheer mass of recruits.
- Aeldari: The Eldar are an alien species that once ruled the galaxy but are now in decline. They are comparable to the elves from Warhammer Fantasy and are particularly fast and psionically gifted.
Four races may not sound like much for Warhammer, but as in Warhammer Fantasy, each race will most likely have legendary leaders who represent their own faction.
Additional features of the new Total War
Each faction must assert itself in the universe and fight for its interests. As usual, there is a turn-based strategy superstructure where we collect resources, build fleets, and move armies. Only now, the whole thing will take place in space and many planets will be engulfed in war. The trailer does not reveal the details of how this will look, but we do get a preview of the galaxy map.
Incidentally, it should even be possible to blow up entire planets in the course of a round. Or you can land there and fight your enemies in real-time battles. But spaceships also play a role here, as you can fire orbital cannons to turn the tide of battle.
Such explosive weapons even have a lasting impact on the battlefield and can destroy the environment.
In Total War: Warhammer 40K, it is also possible to color and name your units yourself. This brings the creative painting that is common in tabletop games into the game.
When will it be released?
There is no release date for Total War: Warhammer 40K yet. However, it is already much further along in development than Medieval 3, which was also recently unveiled – you can read more about this in the link box above. We expect Warhammer 40K to be released next year. Of course, this is not guaranteed.
At least we already know that Total War: Warhammer 40K will be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at the same time as the PC version, a first in the series’ history.
