June 25 is a very special day for gamers this year. That’s because today marks not only the start of the big Steam Summer Sale—the biggest discount event of the year in Valve’s store—but also the pre-order phase for GTA 6.
On Steam, a large portion of the entire game catalog will be on sale; so you’ll be able to really clear out your wish list. At the same time, Grand Theft Auto 6 offers a ticket to what is arguably the most anticipated game in years. The latest installment in Rockstar’s gangster series takes us back to Vice City.
Now that Rockstar has finally clarified the pricing, we know that the base version of GTA 6 costs around 80 euros; while the more comprehensive Ultimate Edition will set you back 100 euros. That’s a hefty sum, and in these times of inflation, many gamers aren’t exactly rolling in cash. Consequently, many users online are currently asking themselves what they’d rather spend their money on today:the Steam Sale or a GTA pre-order.
Yes, the comparison is a bit off. During the Steam Sale, you get a lot more for your money and can start playing right away; GTA 6 won’t be released until November. At the same time, the new GTA is arguably the most important—and very likely the most technically revolutionary—game in years. Many people don’t want to miss out on that. On the other hand, GTA is only coming out for consoles, leaving PC gamers out in the cold for now.
So even though this is, in a sense, comparing apples to oranges, the question of where to invest your hard-earned 80 euros right now is stirring up the gaming community. The following Reddit thread sums up the financial dilemma well:

As a gaming magazine, we generally advise against pre-orders. After all, in the age of digital game downloads, they’ve lost their original purpose, so to speak. Back when games were still sold on physical media, pre-ordering ensured that you’d have your game in hand right on launch day.Thanks to the internet, however, that’s no longer an issue these days.
When you pre-order, you’re also buying a proverbial pig in a poke. After all, we—or other game journalists you trust—haven’t tested the game in question yet and therefore can’tgive you a well-founded purchase recommendation. While GTA 6 is almost certainly not going to be a flop, even in the AAA segment, there are always unpleasant surprises.
So the only ones you’re really making happy with a pre-order are the publishers. Because they’re already having a great time with your money even before the launch.
