The gameplay reveal of Suicide Squad backfired for Rocksteady. Now, according to Jason Schreier, the release of the game will not be until late 2023 at the earliest

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be the next big game from Batman: Arkham developers Rocksteady. Just a few weeks ago the first gameplay for it was revealed and it didn”t exactly cause any excitement. Now the release of Suicide Squad is to be postponed from 26 May to the end of 2023.

This has not been officially confirmed at this time, but it does come from several reliable sources. For example, from established industry insider Jason Schreier

Suicide Squad release not until late 2023?

Actually, Suicide Squad was supposed to be released as early as May 26, 2023. (Bloomberg) but now reports that the game will be pushed into the fourth quarter of the year. This is what Jason Schreier wants to have heard from an anonymous internal source. The report coincides for example with information from (WindowsCentral).

When exactly Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be released with it is currently unknown. An official confirmation on the part of Warner Bros. and Rocksteady is also a long time coming.

Criticism of the Gameplay Reveal is to blame

The negative response to the gameplay reveal for Suicide Squad, which took place at the end of February, is said to be the decisive factor for the release postponement  Rocksteady revealed actual gameplay footage from Kill the Justice League for the first time, which garnered massive criticism.

Because according to the gameplay footage, Suicide Squad will be a true live-service game. Taking on the roles of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang and King Shark, players will fight through masses of enemies, collect loot and new levels, and drive up their Gear Score.

You can watch the gameplay trailer as follows:

Criticism of the actual gameplay: The main criticism here is that the four DC villains hardly seem to differ from each other in terms of gameplay. The fast-paced movement, which partly ignores the laws of gravity, together with the great focus on firearms, also divides opinions.

Criticism of the live service aspect: The fact that there will be an online pass even in the single player and that Suicide Squad relies on an in-game shop with a Battle Pass full of cosmetic items only adds to the criticism. In the comments on YouTube for example, numerous users are already drawing comparisons to Gotham Knights, Marvel”s Avengers or even Anthem.

What could cause the shift?

Game fans should note that a potential delay to the end of the year would by no means result in a major overhaul. The core elements of Suicide Squad could by no means be reworked or jettisoned in such a short time. There will be little Rocksteady can do about the biggest criticisms even by the end of 2023.

What do you think about Rocksteady”s Suicide Squad: Are you looking forward to the new game from the Batman: Arkham developers or are you rather sceptical? What do you think of the gameplay shown so far and the criticism of it? Let us know in the comments!
