Now it’s finally clear why Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has such a miserably long name. While Expedition 33 stands for the specific game, Clair Obscur is the title of an entire franchise. Kind of like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
The director of French studio Sandfall, Cuillaume Broche, confirms this in an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays. But he also confirms that: There will be more Clair Obscur games.
Expedition 33 is one of the stories we want to tell in this franchise. We can’t say yet exactly what they will look like and what the concept behind them will be, but one thing is certain: this will not be the end of the Clair-Obscur franchise.
Direct sequel unlikely
It is highly doubtful that the next title will tie in with the events of Expedition 33. For one thing, Broche himself says in the interview that he likes to forget his previous work when writing sequels.
On the other hand, one of the biggest sources of inspiration for Clair Obscur is the franchise giant Final Fantasy, as Broche has confirmed several times in the past. The Square Enix game series is known for each main installment telling a completely separate story in a fresh game world. It would not be surprising if Clair Obscur took a similar path.
For Expedition 33 itself, the journey is probably not over yet either: The developers want to add even more accessibility features in future updates, but also new content and all kinds of little details
will probably be included in considered.)
The success story of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 may not be over yet. After all, the role-playing game is considered a strong contender for Game of the Year 2025!
