The new Ghost Recon is said to be a radical departure from the open-world formula, focusing instead on immersive missions

It appears that Ubisoft is working on part of its tactical shooter series Ghost Recon, moving away from the open-world formula of the last two installments with an ambitious new title. At least that’s what well-connected insider Tom Henderson

claims.

Undercover in the war zone

There is talk of a “tactical military shooter on a squad basis, almost comparable to military simulations”, according to Henderson’s report.

After the last Ghost Recon installment, Breakpoint, was largely panned by critics (Metacritic score: 5.6 and 65 rating in our test), Ubisoft is now apparently planning to return to the series’ military shooter roots.

The background of the game is to be the fictitious Naiman War in a fictitious Southeast Asian country: This conflict has already claimed hundreds of thousands of victims, mainly through war crimes.

Against this chaotic backdrop, you become part of the special unit “Ghosts”, which operates behind enemy lines to carry out secret missions and identify a traitor in their own ranks.

According to Henderson, Project Over, as the code name for the new Ghost Recon is to be called, is based on genre greats such as the Modern Warfare series, Battlefield, Squad and Ready or Not There will also be missions that touch on potentially dark and controversial topics

First Person: Back to the roots?

An example should be a mission in which you almost shoot a man with a baby because your squad mistakes the child in his arms for a bomb.

As in the very early parts of the series, you will experience such dramatic scenes from a first-person perspective after the last two installments relied on a third-person view.

Henderson’s report also says that Project Over promises to outshine all previous titles in the series visually. His secret insights point to a significant graphical improvement comparable to the quality of Ready or Not, making the controversial missions particularly immersive.

The potential release of the new Ghost Recon is currently scheduled for 2025 or 2026. What do you think of the potential new direction for the Ghost Recon series? Let us know in the comments below
