Medal of Honor has shaped the genre forever. Now, one of the game’s levels is being brought into the modern age.

Unreal Engine 5 shows once again what it does best: breathing new life into old gaming gems. This time with Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

If you’re not familiar with the title, don’t worry. The shooter was released in this country on February 19, 2002, for PC, and at 23 years old, it’s not only old enough to vote, but has also moved out of its parent company, Electronic Arts. Oh, they grow up so fast…

Back to the topic: A remake of Medal of Honor in Unreal Engine 5 – what would that look like? An artist now has the answer.

Quality at the highest level!

The YouTuber Jos van Laar says he recreated the iconic destruction level from U-529 in UE5 purely for entertainment and educational purposes.

The result is visually impressive for a fan project. You can check it out here:

For comparison, we’ve picked out the level from the original game:

The lighting, textures, and dense atmosphere in particular could easily have come from a real remake by EA. However, the stiff and occasionally unintentionally funny animations in particular reveal that the UE5 project is not a real game.

But the viewers on YouTube don’t care. They celebrate what they see and shower it with praise:

  • This is quality at its finest. It’s like reliving my childhood […].
  • Thank you for doing this, it’s a nice reminder of the past.
  • This looks exactly how I would imagine this scene with today’s graphics. An extremely phenomenal piece of work […].
  • To be honest, I was only expecting a few random cinematics with minimal effort, but I’m very impressed! A touch of nostalgia, even down to the placement of the NPCs.

What’s next for Medal of Honor?

No new installment has been officially announced at this time. The last release was Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, a VR-only title from Respawn that received only mediocre reviews from users on Steam.

The future of the series is therefore still up in the air. Thanks to the fan project, however, we now know that there’s no excuse for poor graphics!
