No Rest for the Wicked: The action role-playing game is now twice as big, but fans still have plenty to complain about

The huge Breach update gives No Rest for the Wicked fresh content, new areas, and numerous improvements—but criticism of the action RPG continues unabated.

With The Breach, Moon Studios has given its action RPG No Rest for the Wicked a massive update, which has been available since April 30, 2025. The scope is impressive, but not everything is running smoothly.

What’s in the massive update

The Breach isn’t just a small content update, because it nearly doubles the size of the game Two completely new areas are waiting to be explored, along with new quests that expand the story of No Rest for the Wicked and new settlements.

The combat system also gets a fresh boost with new weapon types: combat gloves and magic wands. In total, the update adds over 150 new weapons, significantly expanding the arsenal compared to launch. New armor sets and a revamp of the shields should also delight loot hunting enthusiasts.

The game world will become significantly more dynamic thanks to the new “Alive” system : Factions and enemies adapt, making the game world feel more alive. The update also introduces the “Plague” system, where you can fight outbreaks of plague throughout Sacra to obtain valuable resources.

For the particularly brave among you, there is now also a Hardcore mode with permadeath and technical improvements have also been made: DLSS 4.0 support, memory optimizations, and shorter loading times should ensure a smoother gaming experience. The game is now also officially Steam Deck verified.

A bumpy launch

Despite all the anticipation, the launch of the update did not go without a hitch: Technical difficulties such as stuttering during combat, occasional crashes, and bugs that caused player characters to get stuck in walls or fall through the floor caused frustration.

Thomas Mahler, co-founder of Moon Studios and game director of No Rest for the Wicked, even called the release day “probably one of the worst days of my life” in an emotional Twitter post.

The developers immediately released two extensive hotfixes to address the most pressing issues, but fan criticism remains: On Steam only 53 percent of recent user reviews are positive.

Many players have criticized the game’s balance in particular. No Rest for the Wicked has always been challenging, but some feel that the game is an “unplayable version of Dark Souls

The reason: No Rest for the Wicked is extremely grind-heavy, even consumable items to heal your character have to be laboriously farmed – and that goes against the grain for many players.

What happens now?

Moon Studios has already announced that the next big step after The Breach will be the introduction of a multiplayer co-op mode for up to four players – and that it won’t take nine months this time.

The developers have explained that they have swapped the co-op mode and the Breach update in order to give players more content to experience with friends later on. The studio also plans to introduce PvP and additional content before the full 1.0 release.
