Have you always wanted your home to be part of a horror game? Sure, right? Waking Tides makes for unfamiliar guests at your couch via augmented reality.

Right in front of you, look! Right next to your coffee on the table. Yes right there is a strange figure. A moment ago there was nothing next to your coffee table, now there is. What happened? Responsible for such a sensory impression could be the adventure game Waking Tides sometime in the coming years.

The one-person project relies on Unreal Engine 5 to create an adventure experience that leaves the screen – literally. Using augmented reality, you can place objects into the real world in front of you by scanning a QR code on your smartphone.

What is Augmented Reality (AR)? AR is not about creating a completely artificial, virtual environment, as is the goal of Virtual Reality (VR). Instead, AR uses a camera to place digital content on a screen in the filmed real environment.

AR is not about creating a completely artificial virtual environment, as virtual reality (VR) aims to do.

What is Waking Tides?

At its core, Waking Tides is an adventure game inspired by the famous Myst series. You explore the environment here similar to a walking simulator and solve different types of puzzles that are often related to objects. And this is where the AR feature comes into play. With the help of a smartphone, you can walk around the object placed in your room and thus search for clues. The trailer shows the feature in motion towards the end.

We don”t know much more yet, but (Waking Tides already has a Steam page). There, the release is indicated as soon available  What that means exactly, however, remains unclear.

What do you think? Does the setting and idea of Waking Tides appeal to you? Would you like to use your smartphone as an aid for gaming on a PC or console? Or would you prefer to keep all the elements exclusively in the game? Can you think of any other ways in which augmented reality could be used in such a game? Feel free to write us your ideas in the comments!
