The PS5 Pro is to be advertised as a console with 4K resolution and 120 Hz – made possible by a new upscaling technology from Sony

The most important facts in brief

  • Sony is probably working on its own AI upscaling feature for the PS5 Pro
  • Target: 4K resolution with 120 frames per second
  • Sony patent was already filed in July 2020

In recent weeks, leaks about the technical specifications of the Playstation 5 Pro have increased. Among other things, it was about an increased number of compute units of the built-in APU from AMD, with which the Pro version of the PS5 should also earn its name.

This refresh has now been reconfirmed by hardware analyst NXGamer, who spoke to the YouTube channel “Moore’s Law is Dead” about the features of the upcoming PS5 Pro.

According to NXGamer’s unnamed sources, the PlayStation 5 Pro will also have an AI upscaling feature. However, this is not provided by the usual suspects

Neither Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) nor AMD’s FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) will be responsible for upscaling the resolution.

Instead, Sony is working on its own upscaling feature, which should elevate the PS5 Pro to a “4K machine with 120 frames per second”.

The Sony patent has already existed since July 2020

Rumors about Sony’s own AI upscaling for the PS5 Pro have been discussed several times in recent months. They first surfaced in July 2020, when Sony filed its own patent for such a feature – just a few months before the release of the “regular” Playstation 5.

The exact functionality of Sony’s AI upscaling is not known, but we can at least get a rough idea from the patent application

A neural network is trained with high-resolution image material in such a way that the built-in graphics chip of the Playstation 5 Pro is able to “upscale” lower resolutions. This should also affect the actual image quality as little as possible

Which format would you prefer for the Playstation 5 Pro: native 4K at 30 frames per second or 4K upscaling at 120 frames per second? How do you justify your decision? Let us know in the comments below
