Nearly 500,000 people are playing Baldur’s Gate 3 at the same time right now, a fabulous success for a classic role-playing game.

Who would have thought that a CRPG would knock top dogs like Dota 2 and PUBG off the Steam throne overnight? One day after release, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the second most played Steam game ever, only trumped by Counter-Strike. A classic role-playing game with complex quests, complex mechanics, complex characters reaches sensational numbers of almost 500,000 simultaneously active players

And the success doesn’t come from nowhere. The Steam reviews are rolling over, of over 18,000 recently published reviews 96 percent are positive. People praise the story, the game world, the co-op and generally the countless possibilities, which also knocked our socks off in the previous GlobalESportNews review of Baldur’s Gate 3 . But most of all, people are happy that here, finally, is a masterpiece without stumbling blocks and modern bells and whistles to fight the big ones:

Even if you don’t play it, just buy it. When was the last time we had a full scale game with no Battle Pass, no in-game store, no microtransactions, no skins and all that crap? oh well…. I know when: August 3, 2023 and it’s called Baldur’s Gate 3.

Other developers complain that this game sets the bar too high – and they’re right. Larian is making the entire AAA industry look old right now. Larian has created a masterpiece and even 10 years from now it will still be considered one of the greatest RPGs of all time. You can’t pass that up.

Or here:

60 euros for a non-service game without microtransactions, Battle Pass, subscription in the year of our Lord 2023.Absolutely wild.

Player numbers will of course drop again after the launch – that’s normal – but at least on the release day Baldur’s Gate 3 made the lines glow so much that all of Steam came capacity problems, which also Larian boss Swen Vincke commented on Twitter with a wink:

Other users joke that Baldur’s Gate 3 can’t be refinded fairly at all, because the character editor alone breaks the two hour playtime limit beyond which a Steam game can’t be returned.

But it’s not only the sun that shines: There are also many complaints on the net about a bug that makes manual saving impossible in the current version

Baldur’s Gate 3 also keeps us as editors busy. Tester Sascha Dani is working all night to make our GlobalESportNews test grow bit by bit, the rest of the team is working on exciting guides to make your start as smooth as possible. So if you have to work today and want to shorten the time until you can start playing: Check back with us often, we’ll keep you up to date.
