Michael Knight and K.I.T.T. are back for a new adventure. And the creators of the Netflix series Cobra Kai are making it happen.

We bet you already have the theme song stuck in your head! In Knight Rider, even the intro song is iconic. Now the 43-year-old crime series starring David Hasselhoff is making its next comeback, thanks to the creators of Cobra Kai.

Knight Rider is now becoming a movie

Michael Knight and K.I.T.T. are not returning for a new TV series, but instead a movie is planned. To this end, Universal Pictures has signed up the trio who successfully breathed new life into The Karate Kid: Cobra Kai can look back on a total of six seasons, strong ratings, and rave reviews from critics and fans alike.

NowJon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are writing a script for a Knight Rider movie together, while Hurwitz and Schlossberg may also take on directing duties.

Many questions remain unanswered: Details about the cast and who will succeed David Hasselhoff are not available at this time.
It also remains to be seen when the final film will be released in theaters.
So far, all we know is that it will be a modern reinterpretation, while retaining the spirit of the original. And that worked out quite well with Cobra Kai.

The long career of Michael Knight and K.I.T.T.

Knight Rider was first broadcast in 1982 and ran for four seasons until 1986. David Hasselhoff definitely owes a big career boost to the TV series, in which he plays a lone hero named Michael Knight. With the help of his intelligent car K.I.T.T., he solves criminal cases and stands up for the weak and needy.

Incidentally, this is not the first remake of Knight Rider. The original series was followed in 1991 by the TV movie Knight Rider 2000, which had several sequels. In 2007, there was even a series reboot, but it was canceled after only 17 episodes due to steadily declining ratings. There are also a few novels, audio plays, video games, and even a board game based on Knight Rider.

Hasselhoff himself wanted to return to Knight Rider for years. In the style of Logan, he had a gritty reinterpretation with a hard R rating in mind, but the project never came to fruition. In 2020, Spyglass Studios planned a reboot of the cult series, but that also fell through.

In 2021, even James Gunn (Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy) spoke up about a possible revival of Knight Rider. However, shortly afterwards he took on the role of co-head of DC and now has an entire cinema universe to manage, so of course he no longer had time for this.

Retro and nostalgia are very popular in Hollywood at the moment. For example, Highlander and The Running Man are also being remade. You can read more about this under the links above.

And in season 2 of Fallout (which starts on December 17, 2025), Macaulay Culkin, a star of our childhood, will be making an appearance. Fans think they already know what role the lead actor will play in Amazon’s video game adaptation.
